Linksys Router’s DDNS (Dynamic DNS) Configuration

Linksys Router’s DDNS (Dynamic DNS) Configuration

This article will show you how to setup and configure the Dynamic DNS feature on a Linksys wireless router. This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to configure DDNS feature on a Linksys wireless router.

DNS servers allow you to map a domain name (www.yahoo.com, en.wikipedia.org, ciscoccnabootcamp.com…) to an IP address. Therefore, instead of using an IP address (http://74.22.33.1, ftp://51.12.22.35…) to access a web server for example, you can use a domain to do this.

Now, assume that you want to deploy a web server inside your home network. In addition, users should access this web server from the Internet using the URL http://www.yourdomain.com. To do this you have to:

  • Install and configure the web server.
  • Configure the router to forward incoming HTTP traffic from the Internet to the web server.
  • Buy a static public IP address from your ISP and create a mapping between the public IP address and the domain name www.yourdomain.com. You ISP will assign this IP address to your Linksys router permanently.

You may ask this question: “Why should I buy a static public IP address”?
Because if you did not so, you must change the DNS mapping each time the router’s public IP address changes. The router’s public IP address changes every time it establishes connection to the Internet.

To avoid this, you can use the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) feature. Therefore, you do not have to buy a static public IP address for your router. What you have to do is to create an account at one of the following sites, and save your credentials along with the domain name on your Linksys router: http://dyndns.org, and http://tzo.com.

Read the following instructions in order to configure the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) feature:

Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.

Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrator’s username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.

Step 3: Click DDNS.

Step 4: In the DDNS Service drop-down list, select either DynDNS.org or TZO.com.

Step 5: Enter your DDNS username or email address, and your DDNS password.

Step 6: Enter the DDNS URL assigned by the DDNS service in the Hostname/Domain name field.

Step 7: Click Save Settings.

    nice review man…

  7. r4nd0mn4me says:

@suxondeez I found that out the hard way. This router is going back to the store tomorrow.

  8. r4nd0mn4me says:

The range on the 5GHz band leaves much to be desired. The dongle needed for the 5GHz band has a lousy antenna. My laptop shows full bars when connected to the 2.4GHz n band while using the internal antenna. When using the dongle it only shows one bar on 2.4GHz and will not connect on the 5GHz band. If you are going to be more than one wall away from your router, don’t bother with dongle. This test was done one floor up and one room over.

@felicks it doesn’t matter, although if you have DOCSYS 3 in your area, that might be something to check out.

  10. felicks says:

very informational, thank you. my question is this. what modem should i use? should i upgrade from my rented time warner or does this matter?

    @ameern999n
From what I’ve researched its practically the same hardware just new shell.

  13. suxondeez says:

@craptbern88 hey i just got this and i have the same problem the range is horrible. and im thinking of going back to the old wrt54g. if your are close to the router works like a charm but it defeats the purpose the whole wireless options.

  14. dankill16 says:

i want that router can you ship it to me?

  15. rednasdees says:

    @Mactutor30
yes but the hub must be able to send power to the drive and most hubs cant
do that so you need to buy the right wan

  19. wwwinsanelygreatmac says:

@DannebrogWiking Not to confuse you, but check out the Airport Extreme router. That’s my preference.

  20. DannebrogWiking says:

i cant figure out if i should get this or a d-link dir 855 getting a router is really confusing :S for some users the router is great and the best on the other hand someone says that its the worst junk ever.. and its pretty much like this with every single router

  21. jst4tim says:

Nice review Mike. I was going to get this but ended up getting the Airport Extreme which I have since returned to get the Time Capsule for the storage and I got it for only $20 more then the Airport so it was a no brainer for me. Can not wait to your vid on the Airport

We have a wrt610n and its NOT GOOD! It always disconnects from the net / VERY SLOW connection vs. wired with ethernet.

so I am using my old (5yrs old) wrt54G again..

rangewise IT S*CKS.. I dont know why the wrt54g was better than wrt610n… my sisters and my brother complained alot when I installed the wrt610n which was supposed to be better than wrt54g but is not cause they got poor reception in their rooms.

    200 dollars wasted!

*plus found similar problems on the web forums.. google it!

  23. jimbodgreat says:
